biography infocusgalerie burkhard arnold

HERBERT BOETTCHER was born 1962 in Rietberg, Germany. The Dipl.-Designer lives in Duesseldorf and works since 1993 as a freelance photographer. He works continuously over years on certain topics (architecture, landscape, container ship travel), which become presented as series in many single and group exhibitions as well as in various publications to the public. Herbert Boettcher concentrates on the conception and implementing of photo projects for enterprises, too.

From 1988 to 1993 he studied visual communication in the specialist area photo/film Design at the Fachhochschule Bielefeld, University of Applied Sciences. Between 1995 and 1999 he taught in the specialist area art to the University-GH Paderborn. In 2004, Herbert Boettcher was distinguished with the Sophie Smoliar Award and 2007 with the International Kodak-Photo-Calendar-Prize. In 2008, Böttcher's book Seamotion, published by Edition Panorama, received the iF Communication Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award.

Böttcher become known by his photos about the architecture of Frank O. Gehry and Zaha Hadid. He is an artist, who works very exact and concentrated in his projects. For SEAMOTION, in 2004 Boettcher went on two container vessels, the Cap Roca and the Cap Carmel, in 7weeks trip from Europe to Brazil, Singapore and Hong Kong. In 2007 a 12weeks round-voyage with Monte Rosa, Cap San Antonio and Monte Cervantes followed. Boettcher travelled from Europe to Brazil, the USA, Venezuela, Brazil and back to Hamburg. In dragging along panoramas the photographer caught the interaction of sea, wind and the moving of the enormous container ships. Developed strong photographs, which produce the singular beauty of moved seas. Pictures in bright colours, with strong contrasts and clear forms, moving photographs of sky, water, ships, containers and ports. On the day and at the night.

In autumn 2008, Böttcher presented his latest work La Mer. In several travels to Normandy and Brittany, he followed the way of painters like Claude Monet. La Mer shows the beauty of the sea, its moving as well as the silence. Seamotion and La Mer points out Böttcher's photographic position and follow the same concept: no to present a moment but a period of time in the photos.
